Sri Lanka's Southern Coast enjoys a tropical climate with two distinct seasons shaped by the monsoon. The good news: even the 'rainy season' is perfectly liveable, and prices drop significantly. Here's a complete month-by-month guide to help you plan the perfect trip to Induruwa and Bentota.
Peak season (Dec–Apr) — clear skies, perfect swimming and whale watching
The northeast monsoon keeps the southern coast warm and dry from December through April. This is the best time to visit — clear blue skies, calm seas ideal for swimming and whale watching, and perfect conditions for exploring the Southern Province. January and February are the peak months with the most settled weather. Prices are higher during this period, and advance booking is recommended for Villa Estuary.
Shoulder season — quieter beaches and great value rates
October, November and May offer excellent value and quieter beaches. The weather is generally good with some afternoon showers — but these are usually brief and the mornings are often beautifully clear. November is particularly lovely as the northeast season approaches and the sea begins to calm. The Southern Coast is far less visited than the west coast during this period, meaning you'll have the beaches largely to yourselves.
Wet season — dramatic tropical rains and lush green landscapes
The southwest monsoon brings heavier rainfall to the Southern Coast from May to September. Swimming is not advisable during the worst of the monsoon as the seas can be rough.
